The source of this article is the transcript of the video of my intervention in the working meeting and public consultation, for the discussion of the update of the Subregional Urban Development Plan for Loreto, Nopoló, Notri, Puerto Escondido and Ensenada Blanca, recently held in the audio-visual room of the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) Loreto Campus
The proposed subregional plan in its current form raises serious concerns for the future growth of the city of Loreto in a sustainable manner, especially with regard to the supply of the water resource.
The biggest problem is that if current conditions are maintained, in the short term there will not be enough water to meet the needs of the people who already live here.
To move forward, the Subregional Urban Development Plan needs some important changes. It must focus on responsible growth that prioritizes the needs of Loreto's current residents, without losing sight of the environment and channeling comprehensive and priority measures with a long-term vision.
To be effective in the above, open communication and teamwork between all stakeholders will be key pieces in the implementation of a realistic urban plan that works for all Loretanos.
Loreto's future growth demands a thoughtful and sustainable approach from all of us. Our current dependence on the San Juan aquifer is no longer sustainable in the short term. And without the implementation of urgent changes to urban development, the city of Loreto is heading towards a serious water crisis, which will only worsen existing inequalities.
Ensuring responsible land development, particularly in ejido areas, will help relieve pressure on resources and reduce the risk of future conflicts.
Going forward, collaboration between local government, state officials, and the community is essential.
Together, they can create a plan that not only meets Loreto's immediate needs, but also protects its long-term environmental health.
By having open conversations, managing resources wisely, and planning infrastructure carefully, a more balanced and just future for Loreto is possible.
